About James

James is a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Creditors’ Rights & Bankruptcy practice groups. His experience in business litigation matters includes representing corporate plaintiffs and defendants in contractual disputes, insurance coverage disputes, financial services litigation, and disputed government fines and penalties. His experience in corporate bankruptcy matters includes representation of banks and lending institutions, secured and unsecured creditors, enforcement of commercial guarantees, and recovery and liquidation of secured collateral. James is admitted to practice before all courts in Tennessee, including the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Tennessee and is admitted to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Prior to law school, James was a public school teacher with the Teach for America program and served as a military officer. As a member of Teach for America, he taught second grade and coached high school football. As a member of the Army National Guard since 2002, he was called to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004 to 2006. During his deployment to Iraq, James earned, among other awards, a Combat Action Badge. He continues to serve as a Captain in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

James is a cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law. While in law school, James was as a staff editor and the office manager of the Mississippi Law Journal, member of the Ole Miss Moot Court Board, and served as president of the Law School Student Body. James received his undergraduate degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is married to Nashville native Claire Cowart Haltom.
