About Gene
Gene practices with the firm’s corporate & tax group. His business law practice consists of general corporate, securities, mergers and acquisitions and intellectual property. Gene has extensive experience in the technology and health care industries, including licensing and protection of trade secrets. He is a member of the American and Birmingham Bar Associations, as well as the Alabama and New York State Bars.
Gene has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Securities Regulations at the University of Alabama School of Law. Gene is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and in Chambers USA America’s Leading Lawyers for Business Law. He was also named by Chambers USA in 2009 and 2010 as a “Leader in their Field.” In addition, he was selected for inclusion in Alabama Super Lawyers 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Gene received his B.A., cum laude, from the University of the South (Sewanee), and his M.B.A. and J.D. from Vanderbilt.
Gene Cross-Examined
Gene is on the Executive Committee of the Entrepreneurial Center and serves on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Information Technology Association, Tech Birmingham, and Operation New Birmingham. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Birmingham Area Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors of the Friends of Linn Park and the TumTum Tree Foundation. Gene is a past president of the Birmingham Venture Club and is a member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham-Sunrise.
What is your favorite thing about the law?
Providing advice to clients about structuring and financing corporate transactions, especially mergers and acquisitions.
What was your first job?
I was a summer camp counselor.
What are your hobbies?
Golf, wine collecting, snow skiing.
What advice would you give to a young student in law school?
If you want to practice business law, learn accounting.
How do you define a “good day?” Every day is a good day!
