“The Pandora Papers Could Happen Again”

Firm News

Beth Shirley was quoted in a Legaltech News article discussing law firm data leaks in light of the October release of the Pandora Papers by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The release included information derived from the disclosure of confidential client information held by law firms across the world, which highlights the importance of prioritizing cybersecurity and data privacy at law firms.

As with any business, Shirley noted that the risk of leaks is a constant possibility that firms must work to prevent but also prepare to address if it happens. “There’s always that possibility,” Shirley said. “There are things that can definitely be done to lower those possibilities, too.”

While some firms may think they have lower risk since they don’t represent high-profile clients or provide services similar to the firms targeted by hackers in the Panama Papers, Paradise Papers or Pandora Papers, Shirley emphasized that the risk still exists for these firms and they should remain vigilant. “Setting aside that potential distinction of the Pandora and Panama Papers, the drastic increase in data breaches due to working online due to COVID is affecting all law firms, no matter what work you do,” Shirley said.
