Burr & Forman Partner Carol H. Stewart Elected to Council of Alabama Law Institute
This prestigious elected position is awarded to just six practicing lawyers from each of the seven congressional districts in the state of Alabama.
The Alabama Law Institute works closely with the Legislative Reference Service in the annual proper placement and codification acts passed by the Legislature within the Code of Alabama. The Legislative Reference Service prepares the vast majority of bills for each session for the Legislature, while major code revision work, such as revision of an entire section of law, is handled by the Alabama Law Institute.
About Carol H. Stewart
Stewart practices in the firm's Business and Litigation sections, focusing in the area of condominium law and complex business torts litigation. In 1994, she completed the Alabama section in Real Estate Transaction Series: Condominium Law and Practice (Matthew Bender) and currently is a member of the Alabama Law Institute Real Estate Section that is studying the Alabama Uniform Condominium Act of 1991. She is a regular lecturer in the areas of condominium and community association law.
Stewart is admitted to the Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee Bars. She currently serves as a Panel Chairman of the Panel of Character and Fitness Committee of the Alabama State Bar and has also served as Chairman of the Business Torts and Antitrust Section.
Stewart served on the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association in 2000 and is a past president of the Women's Section of the Birmingham Bar. She currently serves as a Trustee of the Bar Aid Trust of the Birmingham Bar, and is also a member of the American Bar Association. Stewart is a Fellow of the Alabama Law Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. She is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for her work in Real Estate Law and is recognized in Alabama Super Lawyers. Chambers USA named her as a "Leader in their Field" in the area of real estate law and LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell has awarded her the status of AV Preeminent Rated Lawyer.
Stewart received her B.S. in chemistry from University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and her M.S. in forensic sciences from University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. During law school, she served as Recent Decisions Editor for the Cumberland Law Review and Law Day Chair. After graduation, she served as a Law Clerk to Chief Judge Sam C. Pointer, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
About the Alabama Law Institute
Created by act of the Legislature in 1967, the Alabama Law Institute was funded and commenced operations in 1969. The purpose of the Institute is to clarify and simplify the laws of Alabama, to revise laws that are out-of-date and to fill in gaps in the law where there exists legal confusion. Its diverse membership includes members of the Alabama State Bar Association, the judges of the Alabama Supreme Court, courts of appeals, and circuit courts, federal judges domiciled in Alabama, full-time law faculty members of law schools and lawyer members of the Legislature.
