Overview

Mike Ey primarily has a government relations and local government practice. In the government relations area, Mike is a registered lobbyist and he advocates his client's position before the South Carolina General Assembly and applicable agencies. Mike's ten years of experience on the state Senate's staff gives him a unique knowledge of the legislative process and legislative law and he frequently drafts legislation and develops legislative solutions for business and legal issues.

On the local government side, Mike’s practice includes representation on general local government law, economic development incentives, public finance, land use and zoning matters and development agreements. In addition, Mike has worked with various entities and individuals on Freedom of Information Act issues and State Ethics Act matters.

Experience

  • Successfully lobbied the General Assembly for passage of an economic development incentives package for a multi-million dollar investment by an international business.

  • Served as County Attorney for Lancaster County, South Carolina from 2008-2014.

  • Represented a local government in a multi-million dollar economic development project that involved traditional economic development incentives, as well as several unique real estate and financing issues.
  • Drafted and lobbied for passage of legislation to amend a state level entity's authorizing statute.
  • Regularly advise clients on State Ethics Act requirements and limitations.
  • Defeated legislation proposals detrimental to client.
  • Regularly advise clients on zoning and land use matters including negotiation and drafting of development agreements.
  • Worked with a local government to determine compliance with statutory requirements on an economic development incentives program.
  • Advised a non-profit organization regarding response to a Freedom of Information Act request related to a highly visible and contentious matter.
  • Developed a process for a client to follow to ensure compliance with State Ethics Act requirements.
  • Represented a client in the development and approval of an admission tax sharing arrangement between a local government and a developer.
