Undetectable Bacteria in Platelet Transfusions: A Viable Defense For Blood Banks IADC/Medical Defense and Health Law Committee Newsletter (October 2013)
As a result of this technological shortcoming, blood banks are at risk of being named in negligence actions where undiscovered contaminated platelets are transfused. However, the fact that certain bacterial contaminations can exist at levels below a detectable limit should provide blood banks with a viable defense to such claims.
