Greg Canfield Shares His Journey from Local Leadership to Global Impact with UAB National Alumni Society's Green and Told Podcast

Media Mention

In a recent episode of UAB's Green and Told podcast, Greg Canfield, Managing Director of Economic Development at Burr & Forman, reflects on his unconventional path from private sector leadership to public service, and ultimately, to one of the most influential economic development roles in the state of Alabama.

Canfield shares how his early business experience, rising through the ranks of a Fortune 500 company, laid the groundwork for his entry into local government. What began as community engagement through Leadership Vestavia Hills evolved into a successful run for city council and then a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives. In 2011, he was appointed by Governor Robert Bentley to lead what was then the Alabama Development Office, a role he transformed into the Department of Commerce, where he served for over a decade under two governors.

As Secretary of Commerce, Canfield oversaw the recruitment of $76 billion in new investment and the creation of nearly 200,000 new jobs. He was instrumental in attracting global industry leaders to Alabama, including Mercedes-Benz, Airbus, and Blue Origin, and spearheaded the launch of the "Made in Alabama" branding initiative, raising the state's profile as a competitive destination for international business and innovation. His tenure was marked by a strong focus on relationship-building, consistency, and long-term strategy.

Canfield's work has earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Southern Automotive Manufacturers Alliance Hall of Fame and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Japanese government, placing him among iconic figures such as George Takei and Willie Mays. These recognitions reflect not only the depth of his impact on Alabama’s economy but also his ability to build bridges across cultures and continents.

Now at Burr & Forman, Canfield continues to bring his strategic vision and vast experience to help clients navigate complex economic development opportunities across the Southeast and beyond.
