Overview
In Memoriam: Bill Knight
Burr & Forman pays tribute to former Managing Partner Bill Knight, who passed away on June 21, 2026. Bill had a tremendous impact on Burr & Forman, serving as its Managing Partner from 1987 to 2005.
“Bill was one of a kind and a visionary leader,” said Ed Christian, CEO. “He was a quick study, extremely witty, and completely unflappable. Bill was loved by many at the firm and will be missed.”
Under his leadership, Burr grew from a law firm with one office in Birmingham, AL and 120 lawyers to a regional law firm with offices in Atlanta, Montgomery, and Jackson and more than 200 lawyers. It was during his tenure as Managing Partner that Burr strengthened its position as a leader in economic development matters and became deeply involved in the growth of the automotive manufacturing industry throughout the Southeast.
During his many years with Burr & Forman, Bill earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike for his steady judgment, practical approach, and unwavering commitment to the firm. He helped guide Burr through a period of significant change and opportunity while preserving the collegial culture and client-focused values that remain hallmarks of the firm today. Those who worked alongside him remember not only his leadership, but also his humor and ability to bring people together.
In 2000, as Burr & Forman was experiencing a period of significant growth, Bill reflected on the firm's approach to serving clients: “Our clients are sophisticated users of legal services and expect their matters to be handled by excellent attorneys who understand highly complex areas of the law. We are committed to providing this service to our clients and to expanding as our client base continues to grow.”
The vision Bill articulated more than two decades ago continues to guide Burr & Forman today. His leadership helped establish the foundation for the firm's continued growth and success, and his influence will be felt for generations of Burr lawyers to come.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Bill's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
