Overview

Tim Heisterhagen serves as Counsel in the firm’s Transportation, Insurance, and Products Section practice group, where he represents manufacturers, carriers, insurers, and businesses in high-stakes maritime, aviation, and complex commercial litigation. He handles catastrophic loss claims, regulatory disputes, and bet-the-company exposure with a trial-ready mindset, positioning cases strategically from the outset and driving them toward efficient, favorable resolution.

Before joining the firm, Tim served as Chief of the Civil Division and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. As Civil Chief, he led the federal government’s civil litigation practice, supervising attorneys and overseeing significant, high-exposure matters. As an Assistant United States Attorney, he defended the United States in claims brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act and the Administrative Procedure Act, as well as in complex constitutional and regulatory challenges. He managed substantial risk, coordinated closely with federal agencies, and handled matters in federal court from inception through resolution.

Earlier in his career, Tim built a nationwide products liability defense practice, defending dozens of aviation, maritime, and other complex product cases across the country. He has handled catastrophic injury and wrongful death claims, toxic tort litigation, and medical malpractice disputes, earning a reputation for rigorous preparation, disciplined execution, and courtroom effectiveness. Tim brings federal leadership experience and frontline litigation skill to every matter he handles.

Experience

  • Retained by an aviation engine manufacturer to defend catastrophic product liability cases.
  • Retained by various maritime companies to Jones Act cases, vessel collisions, dockside explosions, and capsizing cases.
  • Tried an eight-week jury trial in Philadelphia, PA involving an aviation accident resulting in the deaths of two individuals with substantial exposure.
  • Obtained a defense verdict in a four-day jury trial in Mobile, AL involving a retaliatory discharge claim.
