Overview

Michelle West is a seasoned trial lawyer who represents clients in complex construction and commercial litigation across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. She has handled a wide range of disputes, from private project claims to multimillion-dollar public infrastructure matters. With experience trying more than 100 jury and bench trials, Michelle is at her best in the courtroom, where she delivers focused, persuasive advocacy on behalf of her clients.

Michelle helps companies assess and litigate construction and commercial disputes and advises government contractors on best practices for complying with their federal contract obligations. Her litigation experience also informs her approach to negotiation, helping clients identify practical solutions that preserve long-term business relationships whenever possible. Clients value her ability to clearly explain their options at every stage of the process, an approach shaped by her background as a language and writing instructor.

Before joining Burr & Forman, Michelle practiced at a national law firm and served as a trial attorney in the legal departments of major national insurance companies. During law school, she held judicial internships in both the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the Fairfax County Circuit Court, and served as Publications Editor of the George Mason University Civil Rights Law Journal.

Michelle frequently speaks to local youth about legal rights and careers in law, leads trial and deposition skills seminars, and serves as a judge in national trial advocacy competitions.

Outside of her legal practice, Michelle is a restoration enthusiast with a strong interest in the preservation of historic homes.
