Birmingham has been called one of the country's best places to work based on competitive salaries and the low cost of living. The economy is driven by the banking, telecommunications, medical and education industries, making Birmingham one of the major business centers in the Southeast. Birmingham or "Magic City" got its beginning as the main industrial center of the South due to its iron and steel production. The city also served as "the cradle" of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s, garnering Birmingham national attention.

The city is currently experiencing a rebirth in its downtown area with a diverse group of residential, corporate and entertainment options appearing throughout the area. It is known to be the cultural and entertainment capital of the state due to its many fine art offerings. In addition, Birmingham has the nation's most green space per capita.

Driving/Parking Directions

Park in the city parking deck located on the west corner of 4th Avenue North and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard (401 20th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203). The deck is across 20th Street North from the Wells Fargo Building. You may enter the deck from both 4th Avenue North and 20th Street North. From the parking deck, take the elevator to the ground floor. Upon exiting the elevator, walk out of the deck. You will be on 20th Street North, facing the Wells Fargo Tower, which is across the street on the corner of 5th Avenue and 20th Street North. Once in the Wells Fargo Tower, take the elevator to the 34th floor, which is the main reception area.

NOTE ON PARKING: Birmingham Parking Authority has reinstated the Free & Easy Parking Program at most of their city parking decks, including the one adjacent to Regions Bank, which is located on 20th Street and 4th Avenue North. Visitors to downtown can now park free for one hour; however, if they park over one hour, the cost will be $1 per hour.

It will be necessary for the visitor's parking ticket to be validated by a Burr & Forman LLP receptionist. The visitor will then present the ticket to the parking deck attendant to prevent paying the normal parking charge.
